Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that a national abortion ban would not get 60 votes in the Senate, so the issue would have to be decided by individual states. He said it would be resolved.
Host Kristen Welker said, “I want to talk about abortion, and as you know, abortion is one of the biggest issues for people across this country right now. In 2022 you could have a national ban.” So I’m sitting here today and I want to ask Leader McConnell, do you support a federal abortion ban?”
“I said it was possible. I didn’t say that was my view. I said it was possible. And I hope the Supreme Court takes this issue to the legislative stage,” McConnell said. That’s why I said we could be seeing it play out across the country. I think ultimately it will reflect the views of these individuals. I didn’t say “it’s possible” or that that’s my opinion. I don’t think any domestic law can get 60 votes in the Senate. I think that’s a real problem. The issue will now be resolved at the state level. ”
