National Guard Deployed to Portland Amid Ongoing Protests
National Guard units have been sent to Portland, Oregon, to safeguard immigration facilities from ongoing protests that have been escalating in recent months. The military officially began its duties in the city on Wednesday, following a statement from President Donald Trump, who announced plans to counter “lawless mayhem.”
A Department of War official shared details with the Daily Caller News Foundation shortly after Trump’s announcement on Truth Social. Authorities reported multiple arrests related to the protests targeting immigration facilities, noting a significant focus on activities that have raised concerns since Trump took office.
Members of the Oregon National Guard are gearing up for their roles, which include training and assisting immigration enforcement efforts. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell emphasized, “We will never allow mobs to take over our streets, burn cities, destroy America. We are a country of law, and we will win.”
The Oregon Military Department did not provide a response to inquiries regarding the situation, and the White House also declined to comment. Meanwhile, Oregon’s Democratic Attorney General has filed a lawsuit against Trump, arguing that the deployment could threaten the economic stability of Oregonians. This legal action comes in light of a memo that formally outlined the plans for troop mobilization.
As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how the deployment will affect the dynamics in Portland and the ongoing protests.
