A military vehicle from the DC National Guard was involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle in the Capitol Hill area of Washington early Wednesday morning. This incident occurred against the backdrop of President Trump’s initiative to address rising crime in the capital. In an announcement made on August 11, the president shared plans to send troops from the DC National Guard and to federalize policing efforts in Washington.
The local fire department reported that one person suffered minor injuries from the crash. According to Vito Maggiolo from the DC Fire Department, one of the vehicles was military-related, and the collision took place at the intersection of 8th Avenue and North Carolina Avenue SE. “A person had to be taken to the hospital with minor injuries following the crash,” he stated.
Furthermore, the DC National Guard verified that a vehicle capable of withstanding explosives was part of the incident around 6:14 AM local time, and investigations are underway. The National Guard and the Co-Task Force DC emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of both their personnel and the public during this incident.
To complement these measures, President Trump has mobilized 800 National Guard troops in an effort to combat crime in Washington. Troops from states like Ohio, West Virginia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee are also being brought in to assist with this initiative, totaling around 1,300 personnel already assigned to the capital.
The White House indicated that the National Guard’s role is centered on protecting federal assets and ensuring law enforcement has a secure operational environment. Officials stressed the importance of maintaining a visible presence to deter crime.
In statements made from the White House, officials noted, “President Trump appreciates and welcomes additional support from local and state officials who wish to participate in efforts to secure our capital against crime.” They also mentioned that more National Guard troops might be deployed to Washington, reinforcing their unchanged mission.
