In a statement Friday, the nonprofit NPA, which represents more than 240,000 U.S. police officers, praised Patel's “distinguished career” as a former federal prosecutor and legal liaison for the Joint Special Operations Command.
“Law enforcement recognizes that the FBI's effective leadership is essential to building public trust and strengthening cooperation between all levels of law enforcement,” the group said. “Kash Patel's proven track record of leadership, counterterrorism and intelligence expertise, and ability to navigate complex legal and operational challenges will help him restore confidence in the FBI's mission and ensure that the FBI He is the ideal candidate to ensure that we remain a steadfast ally of our police force.”
“We are confident that under his stewardship, the FBI will continue to fulfill its important mission to protect and serve the American people,” the group added.
Patel is a close ally of the president-elect and served as both deputy assistant secretary and senior counterterrorism director in the Trump administration.
President Trump announced this month that he would fire FBI Director Christopher Wray and name Patel to replace him. Wray also has the option of resigning from his post before Trump takes office, but he has not yet announced whether he intends to do so.
In a post on Truth Social announcing his plans to nominate Patel, President Trump said, “This FBI will end America's growing crime epidemic, dismantle immigrant criminal organizations, and fight cross-border human and drug trafficking.” We will prevent this evil scourge from happening.”
However, the FBI director typically has a 10-year term, allowing him to serve without pressure from a sitting president.
During President Trump's first term in office, he selected Wray to replace then-FBI Director James Comey, who he fired after less than four years in office. President Trump praised Wray at the time, calling him “a staunch guardian of the law and a model of integrity.”
Additionally, the NPA said Patel's appointment marks a “pivotal moment for law enforcement and public safety across the United States.”
His leadership “will bring a renewed focus on collaboration, ethical standards, and the relentless pursuit of justice,” they continued.
