National Security Council faces additional firings following Rubio’s leadership transition

White House National Security Council Restructuring

A significant restructuring of the White House National Security Council occurred on Friday, with President Donald Trump aiming to shrink the size and influence of previously significant institutions, according to five sources familiar with the matter.

Some staff involved in various geopolitical responsibilities were reportedly given termination notices on the same day. One of the sources, preferring to remain anonymous, indicated that they were not authorized to speak publicly about it.

This change follows Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent appointment as national security advisor, taking over from Mike Waltz. The National Security Council (NSC) did not provide any comments on the developments.

The restructuring is anticipated to enhance the authority of the State Department, the Department of Defense, and other agencies. The aim is to pare down the NSC’s staff to just a few dozen individuals.

The NSC is critical for the President in coordinating national security strategies, often making vital decisions related to America’s approach to global conflicts and ensuring national safety. It’s a crucial role, surely. But it seems now there’s a push to shift some of that weight away from such a large council.

Interestingly, the restructuring also represents a considerable decrease in staff numbers compared to previous administrations. Under President Joe Biden, the NSC had more than 300 employees, while under Trump, even before the latest layoffs, it already had significantly fewer.

According to two sources, those staff members affected by the latest cuts will be reassigned to other positions within the government.
