Nationwide protests against ICE follow unrest in Los Angeles

Protests against ICE that began in Los Angeles over the weekend have now extended to at least 12 states, including New York, Chicago, Portland, and Dallas.

A smaller protest emerged in response to the ongoing demonstrations in LA, which have been active since Friday following the arrests of undocumented immigrants, some of whom have prior violent convictions or gang affiliations.

More than 30 protests were scheduled for Monday, backed by David Fuerta, the president of the California Service Employees Union, who had been detained during Friday’s incident, but was released on Monday.

Currently, none of the protests outside of LA have matched the scale of the unrest in the city, where 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard members have been deployed to maintain order and ensure the safety of federal personnel and property.

Tom Homan, involved in border security, indicated that military presence was necessary to manage the disturbances happening in pockets of downtown LA and surrounding neighborhoods.

However, California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass, claim the city’s approach adopts an experimental model concerning federal authority amid the protest.

Los Angeles

The unrest in LA is expected to carry on, now entering its fifth day, following more violence.

According to the LAPD, protesters clashed with officers near the federal courthouse on Monday, resulting in police deploying gas and rubber ammunition.

There have been numerous confrontations among protesters in downtown, with tear gas and stun grenades being utilized.

Most of the escalating tension seems confined to a few blocks within downtown’s commercial district.

New York

In New York, at least 20 individuals were arrested after protesters occupied Trump Tower in Manhattan on Monday.

A video circulating on social media depicted the demonstrators being restrained and removed by police.

Chicago

Protests took place at Daley Plaza with demonstrators decrying ICE actions in the city. They later assembled outside Chicago Police headquarters, accusing officers of aiding in crowd dispersal.

Austin

In Austin, protesters gathered at the Texas State Capitol for an anti-ICE demonstration on Monday night.

Law enforcement resorted to using pepper spray and tear gas during the protests, leading to at least two arrests. Nonetheless, the demonstrations were primarily peaceful.

Dallas

Dallas saw at least one arrest, with police employing Pepperballs to disperse protestors. The demo initiated at the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge and progressed through the city.

Some participants waved Palestinian flags, standing defiantly against police presence.

Tampa

Hundreds rallied outside Tampa City Hall on Monday, demanding an end to ICE operations. While tensions ran high, there were no reports of violence.

Portland

Portland experienced four arrests over the weekend following the vandalism of an ICE facility. The facility was later found obstructed by barricades made of rocks and timber.

This city has faced significant unrest before, notably during the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020.

Philadelphia

Protests erupted in Philadelphia on Monday after recent ICE activities in LA and surrounding areas attracted local responses.

Demonstrators gathered outside Independence Mall on Monday, and reports indicated no violence during their assembly.

Seattle

Seattle’s Mayor Bruce Harrell attended a protest on Monday, affirming the city’s support for immigrants and solidarity with Fuerta, arguing that these actions affect not only individuals but also governmental bodies.

Atlanta

Demonstrators gathered near an ICE office in downtown Atlanta on Monday to call for an end to nationwide deportations. Another rally is planned for Tuesday on Buford Highway.

New Orleans

A smaller protest took place on Monday outside the Halberg Federal Building, which houses U.S. District Court. The atmosphere remained calm despite various speakers addressing the crowd, while agents from the Department of Homeland Security monitored the situation.
