Navy Veteran Gets New Roof for Free: 'We Feel Truly Grateful'

In North Carolina, a Navy veteran received a full roof replacement thanks to the efforts of several organizations after a contractor found that the roof was close to collapsing.

U.S. Navy veteran Alex Adcock and his wife initially aimed to fix their garage roof, but Brent Parido from Roman’s Roofing alerted them that the main roof of their home was in very poor condition, “to the point where it was going to collapse.”

He noted that the roof was only being supported by shingles, which could be disastrous during a hailstorm or severe weather.

Replacing a roof can be costly. Some estimates suggested a full replacement could run about $45,000.

“We were trying to find someone to help us with it,” Adcock, who served two years in the military until 1957, shared. “A few contractors came by for estimates, but we couldn’t manage the cost. We’d end up in debt. They quoted us around $45,000.”

Brenda Adcock, Alex’s wife, mentioned that they eventually reached out to Transylvania Habitat for Humanity, and the outcome was more than they had hoped for.

A variety of organizations collaborated to give the Adcock family a brand-new roof. According to WLOS, alongside Transylvania Habitat for Humanity and the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, “The Owens Corning Foundation provided all the roofing materials while Roman’s Roofing supplied the labor.”

“Honestly, I had no idea they were going to do this,” she said. “We were so surprised. We asked for assistance but never imagined they’d put a new roof on for us. We feel truly blessed.”

The Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, which started in 2016, was designed to connect military families with a network of independent contractors who would offer and install new roofs for free.

Working with Support Our Troops®, a charity focused on boosting the morale and welfare of active military members and their families, the Owens Corning project aims to express gratitude towards the nation’s servicemen and women.
