Zachary Young to Release Memoir Following Lawsuit Victory Against CNN

Zachary Young, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, is preparing to publish his memoir, “American Spy,” with the help of Scott McEwen, known for co-authoring “American Sniper.” This move comes on the heels of a notable defamation case in which Young successfully sued CNN.

Young, who has CIA training, contended that CNN defamed him during the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in 2021. The network suggested, without evidence, that he profited unlawfully by facilitating escapes from Afghanistan through illicit means. Throughout the trial, Young highlighted his training in various covert techniques, enabling him to safely exchange classified information in hostile territories.

“This book reveals a world that few have experienced,” McEwen remarked about the upcoming memoir.

Interestingly, the jury foreman stated during testimony that CNN staff did more harm than good, further complicating the network’s narrative.

“I lived a life where movies were made,” Young reflected. “Everything was high stakes; decisions could mean life or death. My story is raw, real, and unforgettable,” McEwen added.

The memoir promises to chronicle Young’s journey from his initial recruitment to his missions in perilous and covert situations around the globe.

A jury previously found that he suffered $4 million in lost profits and $1 million for personal damages due to CNN’s defamatory statements, deeming punitive damages appropriate. The resolution occurred before the jury could finalize punitive amounts, with reports suggesting the jury was considering awards between $50 million and $100 million.

Details regarding the settlement remain under wraps.

CNN has indicated that lessons will be learned from this case, with a spokesperson emphasizing their commitment to journalism that is “strong, fearless, and fair-minded.”

HarperCollins’ William Morrow plans to publish “American Spy” in 2026.
