NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Claims Activists Have Made Caitlin Clark a 'Political Football'

Adam Silver Critiques Political Use of Caitlin Clark’s Situation

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has claimed that activists both within and outside of basketball are exploiting Caitlin Clark as a “political football” to serve their own agendas.

He emphasized that the core issue isn’t about fouls, referencing a July 6 event where Alyssa Thomas of the Phoenix Mercury struck Clark inappropriately.

“Ultimately, the situation with Caitlin Clark isn’t primarily about officiating; it’s not simply about whether foul should’ve been called during that moment in the game or if it was indeed flagrant upon review,” he stated.

Silver praised Clark’s character, saying, “I’ve gotten to know Caitlin better. She’s not just a fantastic player; she’s also a remarkable person who aims to be the best she can be.”

He reiterated his concerns, noting, “She’s become somewhat of a political pawn in this country, which is deeply unfair to her. This isn’t merely about the referees; it’s turned into a game of political ping pong regarding her. She’s just a young woman eager to enhance her skills.”

Initially, referees disregarded Thomas’s unsportsmanlike conduct toward Clark, prompting Clark’s coach, Stephanie White, to condemn the actions of those responsible. Though White has seldom backed Clark against the physical confrontations she faces on the court, she labeled the officials’ inaction toward Thomas’s behavior as “absolutely unacceptable.”

The day following the incident, Thomas was penalized for her actions, which were deemed an aggravated foul.

However, fans of Clark expressed outrage after she received a one-game suspension as well.

In a rare public statement, Clark urged WNBA referees to enhance player protection. “The league must prioritize protecting its players. This shouldn’t even be up for discussion. It’s evident that when you view the footage, it’s a clear-cut foul,” she remarked.

Silver concurs, affirming that while the spotlight on the Thomas incident seems “unfair,” there’s still a need for WNBA officials to step up their game. “It’s not right for her to have her story altered due to one foul,” he pointed out. “Do we need improved officiating in the WNBA? Absolutely.”
