DOJ Investigation into Obama Officials Viewed as Political Distraction
On Monday, NBC News suggested that the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) investigation into former Obama administration officials’ supposed involvement in the Russian Gates Scandal is primarily a political maneuver.
The DOJ initiated a grand jury investigation concerning former President Barack Obama and alleged claims that his administration conspired with Russia during Trump’s 2016 campaign. Monica Alba, a White House correspondent for NBC News, claimed that Trump’s team is raising these allegations as a way to divert attention from the ongoing concerns around Jeffrey Epstein.
Alba pointed out that the headlines were dominated by the Epstein controversy and contended that the president was attempting to bring up these allegations to shift focus. She suggested that Trump’s administration might be trying to distract from its own issues by raising unfounded claims regarding Obama’s involvement in the 2016 election. Moreover, she noted that National Intelligence Director Tarsi Gabbard appeared in the White House briefing room to discuss purported new evidence, and there were indications that the Attorney General was looking into this information.
Alba emphasized that there was “no evidence” supporting these claims put forth by the Trump administration, labeling the investigation as an attempt to undermine a political opponent. She reiterated that the lack of evidence makes it seem like a politically motivated effort to distract from more relevant issues.
During Trump’s initial term, corporate media frequently examined the narrative of Russian collusion, aiming to convince the public of the validity of these allegations. For instance, in August 2018, CNN labeled the discussion around “Trump’s non-conspirator” stance, attempting to make the allegations appear credible. In contrast, NBC News maintained in August 2020 that the accusations were “very realistic,” even after they had already been called into question.
In July, National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard released a document alleging overwhelming evidence that Obama’s administration had “manufactured and politicized” accusations regarding conspiracy between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia. The declassified files revealed that both the FBI and NSA were criticized for their reliability in handling intel related to these claims, and the Department of Homeland Security faced scrutiny for its comments regarding the Russian data leak in September 2016.
The memo highlighted that officials within the intelligence community began leaking false intelligence to the Washington Post in December 2016, asserting that Russia employed cyber techniques to influence the election and that the CIA had concluded Russia intervened to help Trump.
Gabbard mentioned on July 23 that she had recommended an investigation into Obama at the DOJ.
Allies of Obama expressed skepticism about the timing of this disclosure, especially after the DOJ announced there were no significant new findings linked to the Epstein investigation. They listened to criticism from “mainstream Republicans” and congressional members who labeled the efforts as superficial.
Patrick Rodenbush, a spokesman for Obama, denied all allegations in a statement on July 22, calling them “ridiculous and weak attempts to distract.” He stated that the document’s contents contradicted the widely accepted view that Russia sought to influence the 2016 election without actually manipulating the vote.
NBC News did not immediately respond to inquiries from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
