NBC’s Ronna McDaniel meltdown marks latest news outlet to face revolt from liberal staff for GOP platforming

The practice of major news organizations hiring former members of Congress, government officials, and political insiders has existed for decades and is largely uncontroversial. The goals of television networks in particular can range from seeking expert opinion on a particular topic to providing a diverse perspective on the day’s news.

But the polarization of American politics and the increasingly liberal groupthink that has taken over newsrooms is upending companies’ ability to make such decisions without creating workplace drama. And it’s currently playing out on NBC News.

On Friday, NBC announced it had hired former RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel as a political analyst for all its platforms, including its staunchly liberal sister network MSNBC.

“There has never been a more important moment to have a voice like Rona’s on our team,” NBC News political director Carrie Budoff Brown said in a memo to staff.

That note may be the only warm welcome McDaniel received from his new family at NBC. NBC News reporter Brandi Zadrozny distanced herself from his new colleague on social media on Saturday, saying, “Reporters can’t control the opinion (or pundit) section.”

Ahead of McDaniel’s NBC debut on Sunday, “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker expressed similar sentiments, telling viewers, “I had no part in her hiring.” McDaniel said he was conducting a “news interview” with the former RNC chairman. Welker said she was booked to appear on the show weeks before the station’s hiring decision.

After Welker’s tense interview with McDaniel, he came under fire for his actions in trying to block the certification of Michigan’s 2020 election results, NBC News veteran Chuck Todd said. immediately attacked those responsible for the network.

NBC’s Chuck Todd slams network bosses on air for hiring Ronna McDaniel as analyst, demands apology

“I think our boss owes you an apology for putting you in this situation, because you don’t know what to believe,” Todd told Welker. “She still has credibility issues that she has to deal with. Is she speaking for herself or is she speaking on behalf of the people who are paying her? ”

“Let me just say this: I think your interview did a good job of clarifying a lot of the contradictions,” Todd added.

Todd continued on social media: “This issue is not about ideology, it’s about basic truth. Those who try to make this a left-right issue are intentionally dishonest. This is an honest journalist’s call. It’s a question of whether the government should provide trust.” To someone who deliberately tried to ruin ours. ”

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski continued their condemnation on air Monday, making it clear that McDaniel is not welcome on “Morning Joe.”

“We were not asked for an opinion on this hiring, but if we were, there would be a number of questions, including Ms. McDaniel’s role in Donald Trump’s sham election scheme and her wrongdoing, as her lawyers might say. “I would have strongly objected because of the pressure on election officials not to certify the election results while Donald Trump was on the phone,” Scarborough said.

“To be clear, we believe NBC News should seek out conservative Republican voices to balance our election coverage,” Brzezinski continued. “But it should be a conservative Republican, not someone who used his position of power to deny an anti-democratic election. And we hope NBC reconsiders its decision. Needless to say, she will not be making a guest appearance on “Morning Joe” in her capacity as a paid contributor. ”

“Deadline: The White House” host Nicole Wallace similarly criticized her employer.

“NBC News is reminding election deniers, knowingly or unknowingly, that the least they can do is talk about the sanctity and integrity of elections, as Ronna McDaniel did yesterday on ‘Meet the Press.’ They teach us that this is much more than going on a TV show or doing an interview to spread lies…and they, as one of us, as badge-bearing employees of NBC News, , you can do that as a paid contributor to Sacred Broadcasting,” Wallace said before inviting guests to further attack the network.

MSNBC’s Joy Reid also verbally slammed McDaniel for his role in rejecting President Biden’s 2020 victory. She cited MSNBC colleagues Nicole Wallace and Michael Steele as Republicans she identifies with, as well as Trump’s vocal opponents Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney, and McDaniel. He insisted that his opposition to him was not partisan.

Rachel Maddow, MSNBC’s biggest star, slammed NBC’s “inexplicable” decision to hire McDaniel and expressed hope the network would reverse its decision.

“Our bosses have been telling us since Saturday that Ronna McDaniel will not be on MSNBC. And that was never made clear,” Maddow assured viewers.

NBC’s union condemned McDaniel’s hiring after the station underwent a series of layoffs.

“@CesarConde never gave an explanation for the layoffs, but his actions speak loud and clear. NBC prioritized election deniers over its own reporters,” NBC Guild wrote on X, adding that NBC Universal Tagged News Group Chairman Cesar Conde. “Rona promoted a lie that many of our nation’s journalists have spent countless hours debunking. @NBCNews executives have given us the message that our newsroom is typically known for. Elevating a liar over the employees who have spent years providing this type of reporting has tarnished our journalism.”

NBC officials told Fox News Digital that severing ties with McDaniel is already under active consideration following the unprecedented response to his hiring. NBC did not respond to a request for comment.

Notably, NBC not only negotiated and hired Jen Psaki, President Biden’s press secretary while she was working in the White House, in 2022, but also offered Psaki her own show, which NBC’s broadcast talent No one expressed their anger.

Psaki herself rejected the comparisons by conservatives and suggested that, unlike her new colleagues, she would bring “honesty” to NBC viewers.

NBC’s ongoing debacle mirrors the turmoil other news organizations faced when they supported the opposition of Republican officials.

Last year, CNN staff publicly revolted when they welcomed former President Trump to a live town hall.

CNN’s in-house media correspondent Oliver Darcy wrote in his newsletter “Trusted Sources” that “it is difficult to understand how the false spectacle aired on CNN could have propped up America.” . “Yes, there was some news coverage…but for most of the night, the nation’s eyes were riveted on Mr. Trump’s abuse of the platform he was given.”

CNN’s Anderson Cooper delivered a solemn monologue at City Hall, telling viewers: “Many of you have expressed deep anger and disappointment. Many of you are outraged that someone who seeks to destroy our democracy was invited to the stage in front of City Hall.” Answer the Questions The crowd of Republican voters predictably spewed one lie after another, then attacked Trump supporters in the audience and tepidly defended City Hall.

CNN faces ‘outrage’ from staffers at Trump Town Hall: ‘It felt like 2016 all over again’

The harshest condemnation of Trump’s town hall came from veteran CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour. She broke down in tears during her commencement address at Columbia Journalism School, revealing that she directly confronted her then-boss, Chris Richt, about her disapproval of herself.

“My leadership team believes they did the right thing, that they served the American people. Some reports have said that there are important new ideas that we learned from President Trump’s mouth that night. It has been written about things… Time will amply prove that President Trump’s electroshock therapy is shocking the world, “transforming undecided people into greater consciousness” Amanpour he said. “Of course, for me, it also speaks volumes that the American people voted against Trump and Trumpism three times: in 2018, 2020, and 2022. We did our duty. We’ve told the story, and we’ve told it to everyone’s hearts.” Awareness has increased, people have had the opportunity to make choices, and they have. ”

“I still respectfully oppose having Donald Trump appear in that format,” she continued, to applause from the audience.

Amanpour’s speech was liked by dozens of CNN staffers, including Jake Tapper, who shared it on social media. City Hall was widely believed to be the moment Licht lost the trust of CNN staff. He was eventually fired after a few weeks.

Perhaps the first time a news organization faced such public backlash from within its newsroom was in 2020, when the New York Times published the now-infamous “Tom Cotton op-ed.”

In an article titled “Send in the Troops,” the Republican senator argued that the president should send in the military to quell the George Floyd riots that have wreaked havoc in cities across the country.

Dozens of Times employees flooded social media in a coordinated campaign, many repeating the phrase, “Doing this puts Black @nytimes staff at risk.”

A few days later, the Times updated Mr. Cotton’s article with a lengthy editor’s note declaring it “does not meet our standards and should not have been published.” Times publisher AG Sulzberger initially defended the publication of the op-ed, but later reversed his stance and blamed a “rushed editorial process.”

As a result, two Times Opinion staffers, James Bennett and Adam Rubenstein, were forced out of the Times. Another staff member, Mr. James Dao, was reassigned to another department.

Bari Weiss, one of the paper’s opinion staff editors, declared in her resignation letter that “Twitter is not on the masthead of the New York Times, but Twitter has become the ultimate editor in chief.” It was right after that meltdown.
