The status of college football bowl games has been widely discussed over the past few weeks. The advent of the College Football Playoff has somewhat diminished the value of other prominent bowls.
While football programs are still incentivized to win enough games to qualify for a bowl game, the proposal could actually look for some of the worst teams in the country. Prominent promoter Roy Englebrecht wants to create an “irrelevant bowl.” The proposed game could pit teams that had a hard time winning during the regular season.
If bowl games had actually been held this season, Vanderbilt and Akron would have been the two top candidates in the bowl selection process. The Commodores finished the season with two wins, while Akron only won one game.

But NCAA officials told the Action Network there is “no chance” the necessary waivers would be granted for a potential “irrelevant bowl.”
Bowl season executive director points out issues surrounding lackluster game
Cities interested in hosting the Irrelevant Bowl will submit bids during the first quarter of this year, according to a release sent to Fox News Digital. The city that wins the bid will be allowed to keep the event revenue.

“There are no polls, there are no rankings, there are no debates. Just two winless or nearly winless teams looking to redeem themselves and one elusive victory,” Englebrecht said in a press release. Stated. “We are aware that the NCAA has become more flexible regarding the number of wins a team can win to qualify for a bowl, and we have granted a waiver in 2024 to allow two teams to qualify to play in the first Irrevant Bowl. I'm going to petition the NCAA to allow it.”
Currently, a team must win at least six games to qualify for a bowl.

Starting with the 2024 season, the College Football Playoff will expand to a 12-team format. The New Year's Six Bowl Games will serve as alternating quarterfinal and semifinal games.
