Netanyahu Accepts Trump’s Invitation to International Peace Commission
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed on Wednesday that he has accepted President Donald Trump’s invitation to participate in the International Peace Commission.
The Prime Minister’s Office released a statement saying, “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted the invitation from US President Donald Trump to become a member of the Peace Commission, a group comprised of world leaders.” Notably, this announcement was shared on social media.
The Peace Commission was initially created to oversee the next steps in Gaza’s reconstruction but has seemingly evolved into a broader initiative. Reports suggest President Trump has extended this invitation to multiple countries, hinting that he plans to mediate international conflicts. According to sources, the proposed board members would serve a three-year term, with opportunities for permanent membership available through a substantial monetary contribution.
As of now, Israel is the latest nation to join this initiative. Other countries that have accepted the invitation include the United Arab Emirates, Hungary, and Morocco. Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan is expected to make his decision soon, while Russia has also received an invitation and will be reviewing it in detail.
Netanyahu’s choice to join the council could create tensions within his coalition. For instance, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has been vocal about his disapproval of the council’s role in Gaza’s reconstruction.
The Associated Press noted that Netanyahu’s acceptance marks a shift from previous stances held by his office, which had expressed reservations about the Gaza Strip Executive Committee’s operations, claiming they were not in alignment with Israeli policy.
Earlier this week, Paraguay, under conservative President Santiago Peña, accepted Trump’s invitation, with Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano highlighting it as an excellent opportunity for Paraguay and confirming ongoing discussions with the US State Department to finalize arrangements.
Moreover, last week, Argentine President Javier Milei announced that Argentina had also been invited to join the initiative as a founding member, expressing on social media that it was an honor and emphasizing Argentina’s commitment to combating terrorism and promoting peace.
