Netanyahu Announces Trump as Israel Prize Recipient

On Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel will present President Donald Trump with the Israel Prize, a move that marks a significant departure from historical precedent. This announcement came after a meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

During a press briefing following their discussions, Netanyahu and Trump revealed their plan to bestow this prestigious honor upon him, which stands as Israel’s highest cultural accolade. “We’ve decided to break with tradition or perhaps establish a new one: to award the Israel Prize. It’s been almost 80 years since we’ve given it to anyone not from Israel, but this year, it goes to President Trump,” Netanyahu noted, adding that the decision was confirmed over lunch by the Minister of Education, who oversees the award.

Netanyahu expressed that this award recognizes Trump’s “tremendous contributions to Israel and the Jewish people,” emphasizing how appropriate it is to honor him in this way.

Following the announcement, Trump expressed his gratitude, saying he felt “truly honored.” Netanyahu, in turn, remarked in October that Trump was Israel’s “greatest friend” ever, especially following Hamas’s release of 20 hostages under a peace arrangement facilitated by Trump and his administration.

Netanyahu praised Trump’s stance on various issues, mentioning his support for Israel at the United Nations, the acknowledgment of Israel’s rights in the West Bank, and the decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear agreement, which he characterized as “disastrous.” “No American president has ever done more for Israel, not even close,” he stated at that time.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has claimed the lives of tens of thousands since the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and about 240 hostages taken. Recently, a peace agreement was achieved between Israel and Hamas, largely due to months of mediation by officials from the Trump administration.

As part of this agreement, Hamas released the last 20 hostages in exchange for Israel’s release of 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. The deal aims to end the conflict and rebuild Gaza through a detailed plan, offering amnesty to Hamas members who lay down arms while excluding those who choose to continue the violence from future governance in Gaza.
