Israeli Cabinet Expands Gaza Occupation Plans

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the government’s security cabinet plan for Gaza is broader than initially revealed. He emphasized that Israel “must finish the job and defeat Hamas completely.”

The announcement about this initiative came on Friday, and Netanyahu clarified that it now encompasses not just Gaza City but also “central camp” and Mwasi, which is a significant area with a population exceeding half a million. He mentioned having discussed this plan with President Donald Trump, expressing gratitude for ongoing American support.

“Our aim isn’t to occupy Gaza, but to liberate it,” Netanyahu asserted on Monday. The objectives include entirely eradicating Hamas from Gaza before transitioning to stability and handing over control to friendly Arab entities opposed to Hamas.

The cabinet vote endorsed five key principles: disarming Hamas, ensuring the return of all hostages—both alive and deceased—managing security in the Gaza Strip, and creating an alternative citizen governance that does not include Hamas, according to a release from the Security Cabinet.

Plans Approved for Gaza City Occupation

Israeli Defense Minister Katz received the green light for the initiative, which involves mobilizing over 400,000 military reserves to execute the operation until November 30th.

This strategy coincides with several of Israel’s longstanding allies expressing intentions to recognize a Palestinian state. Earlier this year, France announced its plans, and the UK and Canada followed suit over the past fortnight. Recently, Australia also joined this movement.

Potential Challenges to Future Peace Efforts

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese articulated that recognizing the rights of the Palestinian people aligns with commitments obtained from Palestinian authorities regarding governance in the West Bank. This recognition notably excludes Hamas, which Australia has labeled as a terrorist organization. Furthermore, Albanese reiterated demands for the return of Israeli hostages held by Hamas since October 7, 2023.

He stated, “The two-state solution is humanity’s best hope to stop the cycle of violence in the Middle East and alleviate the suffering in Gaza.”

Canada’s Upcoming Recognition of Palestinian State

In a related note, Canada is set to recognize a Palestinian province in September, according to Prime Minister Carney. He described the situation as “beyond the worst fears of the world,” criticizing the Israeli government for allegedly violating international law and depriving essential resources from vulnerable populations, especially children.

Meanwhile, the United States continues to defend Israel against genocide allegations at the United Nations. Although some UN Security Council members have criticized Israel, China has termed the Gaza situation as “collective punishment,” while Russia labeled it as “reckless enmity” during a security meeting on Sunday.
