Netanyahu declares ‘victory is within reach’ as Hamas reduced to ‘last remaining bastion’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that victory over Hamas in Gaza is “within reach.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu made the remarks during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday” with host Shannon Bream. He said Israeli forces had driven Hamas back to its last stronghold in Gaza and insisted the operation must continue to deliver the final blow.

“Victory is within reach,” Prime Minister Netanyahu said. “We have already destroyed three-quarters of the Hamas organized terror battalions. Three-quarters, 18 out of 24 – we are not going to leave the remaining six. It’s like leaving 1 there. You say, ‘Well, they can have a little territory. That’s fine.’

“Clearly, ISIS will rebuild. If we don’t complete our last remaining strongholds, Hamas-ISIS will rebuild as well,” he added.

Bream asked Netanyahu about President Biden’s recent comments that appeared to criticize Israel’s operations in Gaza. “The response in Gaza has gone too far,” Biden said Thursday.

Prime Minister Netanyahu told Bream that he did not know what Biden’s comments meant, adding that he had not spoken to Biden since the remarks.

He went on to enumerate the various efforts being made by the Israeli military to minimize the loss of civilian life in the Gaza Strip.

Fighting in Gaza remains heaviest in the southern city of Khan Yunis, where top Hamas leaders are believed to be trapped in a network of tunnels.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israeli troops will remain in Gaza for a long time after the war, creating another point of friction for the Biden administration. Biden called the post-war occupation of Gaza a “mistake” and urged Netanyahu to find a two-state solution.

“The Palestinian people deserve a state of their own and a future free of Hamas,” Biden wrote in a November 2023 op-ed in The Washington Post.

Critics argue that a two-state solution is unrealistic at this time. Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman said the Palestinians are “unwilling” to accept a Jewish state, adding that any Palestinian state would very likely become a terrorist state.

“I do not believe a two-state solution is possible, and even if it were, I would not recommend it. For more than 50 years, hundreds of self-styled ‘peacekeepers’ led by the US have tried to coerce Israel into “and lead the Palestinians to a two-state solution.” “No matter who is in charge, their efforts will fail repeatedly.”
