Netanyahu Discusses Cockpit Attack on Flight to Tel Aviv

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke about the shocking cockpit attack on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv during an exclusive interview on Wednesday. He shared details of the incident and commended the “unbelievable courage” displayed by passengers who managed to restrain the assailant and keep the aircraft stable, particularly praising Yaniv Chayon, the passenger who confronted the attacker.

Netanyahu emphasized that this quick action prevented what could have been a disaster of “unbelievable proportions.” He recalled the tense atmosphere on the plane, noting that the passengers, including 30 children, were already praying, fearing for their lives. “And this young man just acts with incredible, incredible heroism and saves the day,” he remarked.

The incident involved a pilot aboard a FlyDubai flight who allegedly stabbed a fellow pilot and attempted to crash the plane with more than 100 people onboard, an act that authorities are treating as a suspected hijacking. The injured captain managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing brave passengers to enter, subdue the attacker, and prevent further catastrophe as the aircraft experienced a dangerous nosedive.

Netanyahu had just met with Chayon earlier that day, showering him with praise for his bravery under such “impossible” conditions. The prime minister described the young man’s calmness and courage as critical in averting a situation likened to another 9/11—an event that, of course, holds heavy emotional resonance, given its history of loss.

“What he did was tremendous,” Netanyahu explained, acknowledging that Chayon was looking out for not just himself, but for others, including his family and 174 passengers—most of whom were Israeli. It was an act of selflessness in a moment of sheer panic.

Netanyahu attributed the attack to deep-seated antisemitism, suggesting that the attacker harbored an intense hatred directed toward Israelis. While he did not know the exact background of the assailant, he highlighted the danger of the extremist mindset that leads to such violent acts.

As the plane fell from 30,000 feet to 17,000 feet in about a minute due to the unfolding chaos, other flight crew members took command, ultimately landing the aircraft safely in Saudi Arabia. The captain, identified as Smit Machchhar, is currently in critical condition, fighting for his life after sustaining serious injuries.

The aftermath saw the alleged attacker detained after the emergency landing. FlyDubai is currently investigating the incident and has temporarily suspended all flights to and from Israel as a precaution while they assess the situation further. Netanyahu made a wry comment, hinting that for any future travel, passengers would do well to sit next to an Israeli, reflecting on the ordeal’s unexpected heroics.
