Bibi is due to visit Washington DC to meet with US senators, Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden, and is also due to address Parliament on Wednesday.
Officials for Trump and Netanyahu have recently discussed the possibility of an in-person meeting between the two leaders, possibly in Florida, and while Trump has not explicitly ruled out the idea, he has not yet agreed to one, according to sources.
If a meeting were to take place, it would likely happen later in the week, after Trump holds a rally in North Carolina on Thursday, one of the people said.
The sources added that if Netanyahu can arrange a meeting with Trump this week, he could be seeking to shore up support for his policies in the West Bank and Gaza, and for the fight against Hezbollah on the country’s northern border.
It would also be an opportunity for Trump to begin more formal interactions with Netanyahu at a time when the Harris team is still figuring out how to deal with the prime minister, who is in an increasingly tense relationship with the pro-Palestinian Democratic administration.
U.S. and Israeli officials said this week they want to move forward with negotiations toward a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages still being held by Hamas terrorists.
Egyptian and Qatari delegations were due to meet in the Middle East last week along with Israeli and US representatives, but Israel informed the US that it would not be sending a team after all.
