Nets Struggle Despite Win Over Suns
In a matchup before a crowd of 17,344 at Barclays Center, the Nets managed to secure a 126-117 victory against the Suns, but their defensive issues were glaring once again.
Even with key players like Egor Demin, Cam Thomas, and Dayron Sharpe sidelined, Brooklyn’s offense remained fairly consistent. Still, their defensive efforts left much to be desired, and overcoming that challenge seems to be a persistent struggle.
With a record of 12-29, the Nets have dropped seven of their last eight games. It’s tough to envision them finding success unless they can tighten up their defense.
Brooklyn shot impressively at 57.1 percent overall and nailed 20 of 39 from beyond the arc. Michael Porter Jr. stood out, scoring 23 points and leading a total of seven Nets players in double-digit scoring, though they couldn’t prevent the Suns from pulling ahead by as much as 20 points at times.
As it stands, Brooklyn remains fifth in the lottery standings, trailing Sacramento by one game while staying just ahead of sixth-place Utah, whom they lost to recently.
The Nets allowed a staggering 71.4 percent of their total points in the first quarter, quickly falling behind by 15. Early on, they permitted the Suns to hit 6 of 9 three-point attempts, leading to a 28-13 deficit.
For the Suns, Dillon Brooks netted 27 points, and Devin Booker followed with 24. Jordan Ott took the reins as head coach for the first time after a six-year stint as an assistant. Initially projected to win only 30 games this season, the Suns are currently on track for 50 victories under his leadership, having gone 11-4 in their last 15 outings.
Brooklyn initially led 9-7 when Nick Claxton hit a three-pointer, but then they allowed the Suns to go on a scoring run that made it 21-4 by the end of the first quarter.
That put Brooklyn in a position of chasing for the remainder of the night. Booker later scored to extend the Suns’ lead to 64-44.
Though the score was 72-57 with just under two minutes left in the first half, the Nets managed to trim the gap to four points at halftime, thanks to a three-pointer from Terrence Mann.
In the fourth quarter, the Nets fell behind by 18 but clawed back with a 16-3 run. Porter’s jumper brought them within five points, and he scored again to make it 114-109 with 5:34 remaining.
Clowney and Wan Wan then cut it to 118-114 with a driving floater. Brooks attempted to slow down the Nets’ momentum with a three-pointer, but a technical foul on him seemed to add to Brooklyn’s chances.
However, despite their efforts, the Nets faltered in the closing moments of the game.
