Salas' son was shot to death and her husband was injured in 2020 by Roy Den Hollander, a disgruntled lawyer who came to Salas' residence posing as a FedEx delivery boy.

“After our tragedy, I think you all have a little more understanding of everything that goes on inside and outside of the courtroom. There are 30,000 judges in our country in general…this is because judges “This is an example of the issues we face and what we need to do to better protect judges.”
Salas emphasized the need for laws to protect judges, especially in states that currently do not provide protections.

Meanwhile, Salas will continue to grapple with the loss of her son, which she said is especially difficult during the holidays. She said her faith in God teaches her that positive change will come if future incidents can be prevented.
“I would like to remind the audience that this attack on Judge Holthus is the first attack of 2024. We saw retired state Judge Romer murdered. This is a sign to all of us that we need to do more to protect our judicial officers.”
