Nevada judge sentences Connecticut police officer to prison for fatal DUI crash that killed colleague

A Nevada judge on Tuesday sentenced a former New Haven, Conn., police officer to at least two years in prison after pleading guilty to causing a drunk-driving crash in Las Vegas that killed a fellow police officer. .

fox 5 Clark County District Judge Susan Johnson sentenced Robert Ferraro, 37, to two to five years in prison for DUI causing death, Las Vegas reports.

Ferraro was originally charged with DUI causing death and reckless driving, but the lesser charges were dropped after he agreed to plead guilty on June 21, 2023.

Police received a 911 call at approximately 4 a.m. on September 17, 2021, regarding a two-vehicle collision near the intersection of W. Spring Mountain Road and S. Decatur Boulevard.

The caller reported that a vehicle had crashed into a building and the occupants were ejected.

When officers arrived, they spoke with Ferraro, the driver of the Rolls Royce involved in the accident. Ferraro had “watery eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath,” the police report said, adding that he refused a field sobriety test. He was transported to the Clark County Detention Center, where police obtained a search warrant to draw blood.

An investigation revealed that Ferraro, who had been with the New Haven Police Department for six years at the time, was behind the wheel of the Rolls-Royce. Three other police officers and two women were also in the luxury car.

FOX 5 reports the vehicle lost control, struck an occupied vehicle in the driveway, continued down the road and struck a utility pole, a palm tree and a fire hydrant.

The Rolls-Royce briefly went airborne, and New Haven Police Officer Joshua Castellano, 35, was ejected from the vehicle before rolling over and eventually righting itself.

Castellano was taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to the department's report, investigators found the vehicle's crash data recorder, deployed airbags, documentation, personal items proving ownership and occupancy of the vehicle, GPS devices, personal electronic devices, biological samples, printed materials, and liquids. A search warrant was reportedly obtained to obtain the items.

Detectives also found a red pill on the passenger floorboard.

Investigators also used video from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Fusion Watch Center, which showed the Rolls-Royce passing over Decatur before the crash.

The police report said the video showed the vehicle reaching the intersection at a high rate of speed, then bottoming out and sparks coming from the undercarriage, the department said.

Police added that the occupants of the Rolls-Royce were not wearing seatbelts.

FOX 5 reported that New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said Ferraro resigned last year.
