Chicago Abortion Clinics Expand Services
Abortion clinics in Chicago have begun providing third-trimester abortion services, adding to the ongoing controversial discussions surrounding reproductive rights. One notable establishment, the Hope Clinic, launched its second location in the Uptown neighborhood on June 2.
The clinic enthusiastically shared on social media: “Hope Clinic is open in Chicago, Illinois, and is expanding care through all the parts! Every time everyone needs it, they deserve access to abortion care because determining and acting on the best thing for you should not be on someone else’s timeline.” Their website states that they perform surgical abortions for women up to 34 weeks into their pregnancies.
As reported, Hope Clinic stands out as the only standalone facility in the Midwest offering third-trimester abortions, which is quite rare in the country.
Under Illinois law, a woman can legally obtain an abortion until around 24 weeks, at which point it generally centers on fetal viability. Later-term abortions are permitted, though they must consider factors like maternal health, which may include physical or psychological well-being.
Various reasons for seeking a late abortion have been highlighted on the clinic’s social media. Some women mention discovering fetal abnormalities, while others express they were unaware of their pregnancies until much later. Accessibility to care early in pregnancy also comes into play, and some simply state, “I just don’t want to be pregnant.”
Dr. Elinking, the chief medical officer at Hope Clinic, emphasized their commitment to following the law while striving to provide equitable access. “I want people to know that we absolutely follow the law, but we are really determined to provide access to as many people as possible,” she explained.
A 2022 study indicated that by 34 weeks, most babies weigh around five pounds, and a high percentage can survive if born at this stage. Despite the legality, polling shows that a significant part of the American public opposes late-term abortions.
Local pro-life groups expressed concerns, feeling that late-term abortion may be viewed as harsh. Eric Scheidler from the Pro Life Action League stated that there is a growing recognition of the severity associated with abortions at later pregnancy stages. Others, like Anne O’Connor from a pro-life organization, labeled a third-trimester baby as a “fully formed, unique person,” deeming such procedures both unnecessary and troubling.
In a response to criticism, the Hope Clinic defended its operations, asserting that their services are aligned with Illinois law, and it’s crucial for individuals facing health complications during pregnancy to explore all treatment options. Their aim is to assist patients in making informed choices for themselves and their families.
