B61-13 Gravity Bomb Completed Ahead of Schedule
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), part of the Department of Energy, announced the successful completion of its first B61-13 gravity bomb on Monday.
This announcement came during an event at the Pantex facility in Texas, which was led by Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
In a tweet, the Department of Energy highlighted that the nuclear gravity bomb was completed a year earlier than expected. This reflects a renewed sense of commitment to nuclear capabilities in the U.S.
“Modernizing America’s nuclear stockpile is vital for ensuring the security agenda,” stated Secretary Wright, according to a press release from the Department of Energy. He emphasized that the rapid production of the B61-13 showcases the expertise and urgency involved in enhancing U.S. deterrence.
The NNSA, in partnership with the U.S. Air Force, managed to distribute its first unit of the B61-13 within two years of launching the program, which was slightly longer than anticipated.
Described as a key asset in the U.S. nuclear triad, the B61 has been noted as the most versatile nuclear weapon currently available.
During his visit, Secretary Wright was shown around the facilities, which play a crucial role in the nation’s nuclear arsenal.
In contrast to earlier models, the B61-13 incorporates advancements from the recently completed B61-12, incorporating enhanced safety, security, and improved yield designed for larger military targets.
“We’re upping production of the B61-13 while adhering to the highest safety standards, and this achievement does not interfere with the other ongoing modernization initiatives,” remarked David Hoagland, who oversees the defense program.
The B61-13 is part of a broader effort by the NNSA to ensure the reliability of nuclear arsenals through various modernization programs.
By optimizing design reviews, engineers have been able to speed up development, leading to hardware testing just three months after obtaining approval and funding from Congress. While the B61-13 expands the President’s nuclear capabilities, ongoing collaboration between the Department of Defense and the NNSA aims to tackle more complex military target situations.
