Family Farm in New Jersey Opposes Land Seizure for Affordable Housing

A family farm in New Jersey, which has been in operation for 175 years, is currently contesting the local government’s attempt to seize part of their land for affordable housing development. Andy Henry, along with his brother Christopher, shared their experience during an interview, expressing their strong opposition to the seizure.

“On April 24th, I received a letter informing me of this decision,” Henry said during a broadcast. “Since then, we’ve been pushing back. Now they’re saying they’ll just take half of our farm, leaving us with not enough space for at least 40 cows and some sheep.” It’s a challenging and, I imagine, rather emotional situation for them.

The Cranbury Township Committee has put forth a plan to facilitate affordable housing, which will allow the government to use eminent domain to claim the Henry family’s property. This plan stems from a New Jersey initiative aiming for towns to create over 146,000 affordable housing units by 2035, according to reports.

Henry reflected on the impact of this development, stating, “It makes me feel bad. It was shocking. We’ve turned down developers for years, wanting to protect our land.” The family has owned the farm since 1850, valuing it as an integral part of their legacy and heritage.

When asked about the significance of their land, Henry emphasized its importance not only to his family but to the wider cranberry community as well, pointing out that the farm has historically contributed to local food supplies.

Community support has been significant; a GoFundMe campaign has raised over $100,000 to assist the Henry family with legal fees. Moreover, the situation has captured the attention of the Trump administration. Agriculture Secretary Brook Rollins commented on the government’s actions, asserting they are exploring all legal avenues to back the Henrys’ fight.
