Seagull Beheading Incident Leads to Animal Cruelty Charges

A man from New Jersey faces animal cruelty charges after an alarming incident involving a seagull. The man reportedly beheaded the bird when it attempted to snatch French fries from his daughter.

Franklin Ziegler, along with his daughter, was at Surfside Pier in North Wildwood during their Independence Week celebration in 2024.

Following the act, the 30-year-old carried the dead bird around the amusement park, even asking staff if he could provide them with trash bags.

Witnesses described the scene as terrifying and promptly alerted the police.

Ziegler, who hails from Cape May, reportedly reacted aggressively towards the police and resisted arrest, leading to additional charges.

“During the investigation, Ziegler displayed anger towards the officer during a separate issue, proving uncooperative, which culminated in his arrest for resisting disorderly conduct,” authorities noted.

Under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, it’s illegal to pursue or kill migratory birds, which adds a serious legal dimension to this situation.

Industry expert Ballyfast, who has specialized in seagull control for over 20 years, highlighted the growing problem of seagulls becoming overly comfortable around people, often associating them with food.

“We’re facing issues with seagulls stealing food from diners at outdoor restaurants,” he mentioned. “They’ve even attacked restaurant employees and can be seen rummaging through trash.”

According to Fast, his organization receives multiple legitimate calls for assistance concerning seagulls daily. Controlling these birds along the boardwalk presents a significant challenge.

“Our strategies aim to minimize seagull intrusions without disturbing visitors on the Boardwalk,” he explained. “Seagulls tend to settle in areas where food is readily available.”

Ziegler, at this point, has not commented on the incident.
