An eight-year veteran of the New Jersey State Police (NJSP) died while training an elite team at headquarters over the weekend.
Trooper II Marcellus E. Bashear’s death was announced Sunday night, but details about what happened at NJSP headquarters in Ewing at the time of his death have not yet been released. He was found in the division’s swimming pool, and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. FOX 29 Philadelphia reported.
“His dedication and passion for serving the people of New Jersey exemplifies honor, duty and loyalty,” NJSP shared on its social media pages.
Bethea was training to become a member of the Technical Emergency and Mission Specialist (TEAMS) unit. It is a 24-hour emergency response unit prepared to deal with “police emergencies,” according to . New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said in a statement on X that an investigation into Beshear’s death is ongoing. Murphy said Beshear showed “a passion and spark for service from an early age” when he participated in NJSP’s Trooper Youth Week while attending Burlington Regional High School. The governor said he and his wife were “deeply saddened” by Bethea’s death.

Beshear was a member of the 156th Class of the State Police. He served with Troop “D” from Moorestown Station.
