New Initiative for Food Aid in Gaza
In response to concerns over how humanitarian aid might be diverted or reach military zones, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) has introduced a new strategy for distributing food aid directly to those in need. This announcement came on Wednesday, and the initiative aims to ensure that the assistance reaches Gazans without interference from Hamas.
The newly established system allows local community leaders to connect with GHF or its non-governmental organization partners to facilitate distribution at a community level. GHF’s team will assess the needs of these leaders, initiate the distribution process, and local volunteers will collect and ensure that the food boxes are delivered to the intended recipients.
John Ackley, the interim executive director of GHF, highlighted the necessity for change in humanitarian responses, stating, “We can’t keep doing how they are constantly doing. The big challenges require new ideas.” He emphasized the need for innovative solutions given the pressing humanitarian situations on the ground.
Interestingly, leaders from the US-backed group have noted expressions of gratitude from the people in Gaza towards former President Trump for his aid initiatives. According to GHF, cooperation with local organizations like Al-Amal has already seen approximately 2,000 food boxes successfully delivered to Central Gaza residents.
Since its operation began in May, GHF claims to have provided approximately 67 million meals, though its distribution methods have faced significant criticism. Due to previous models, individuals needing assistance had to reach one of four designated points for food aid. Critics, including various humanitarian organizations and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), have raised alarms over reports of violence occurring at these locations. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), however, have denied these claims, labeling them as false.
According to testimonies relayed by Israeli coordinators, there have been accusations that Hamas is engaging in hostile actions against Gazans approaching aid sites, and that they have misrepresented the situation, alleging IDF aggression.
GHF leaders have also alleged that Hamas has been hoarding humanitarian supplies, exploiting them for strategic purposes. Ackley admitted that operating within a complex and perilous environment like Gaza necessitates creative solutions to effectively reach those in need, and he expressed pride in the collaboration with local NGOs to continue providing assistance.
Looking forward, GHF aspires to partner with more organizations to enhance its aid delivery capabilities, aiming to distribute over 20,000 boxes each day throughout Gaza, which equates to about 1.2 million meals.
Despite the mixed reactions regarding GHF’s distribution strategies, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the importance of this new system, stating that it effectively prevents Hamas from misappropriating resources meant for the people. In a recent interview, he emphasized, “We have our own distribution system established to prevent Hamas from stealing food that should go to the population.” The US State Department has also committed $30 million in funding to support GHF’s efforts.
