New tool identifies fake Gaza accounts exploiting the war

A new tool on X has uncovered that several users soliciting donations while claiming to be in Gaza are actually operating from outside the region, taking advantage of the ongoing conflict.

The social media platform recently introduced a feature that discloses relevant background information about accounts, such as their geographical locations.

This feature has unveiled a broad network of accounts exploiting global crises and political turmoil, including those in war-torn Gaza.

“The new X feature has exposed numerous fake ‘Gaza’ accounts,” stated Israel’s Foreign Ministry.

“Some users are from Pakistan, others from London or elsewhere, all pretending to endure hardship in Gaza while relaxing in cafes far away,” the statement continued.

One account, posing as Yasmine.muhamsd, claims to be a mother struggling in Gaza with her children, often sharing a picture of a distressed woman with a baby asking for funds. However, geolocation shows this account is based in India.

Since the feature went live over the weekend, the account has removed all previous posts.

Another account impersonates a Palestinian father, Mahmoud Salma, who frequently posts about the challenges of raising his daughters amid ongoing threats. Yet, this account appears to be linked to a different donation page than the one created by Salma’s actual family.

These flagged accounts have been traced back to the UK, contrasting with the authentic social media presence of the real family.

Moreover, Mostasem A. Daroul, a journalist in Gaza, faced criticism from the Israeli Foreign Ministry for allegedly spreading misinformation after a trip to Poland for a project.

In response, Daroul posted a humorous video questioning the existence of such a devastated landscape in Poland.

Meanwhile, X acknowledges that the reported locations of users may not always be correct and can fluctuate over time.
