Letitia James Arraigned on Federal Charges
New York Attorney General Letitia James appeared in federal court in Norfolk, Virginia, on Friday, where she pleaded not guilty to charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution.
The allegations against James are linked to her 2020 purchase of a home in Norfolk. Prosecutors argue she misrepresented details about the property to secure better loan terms.
According to the indictment, James gained from what is characterized as “unjust enrichment” on a mortgage of $109,600, which allowed her to save nearly $19,000 over the duration of 30 years.
James’ arraignment adds to an ongoing series of legal troubles she faces, particularly as it coincides with charges aimed at President Trump. Interestingly, there’s been pushback from career prosecutors throughout the process, some of whom have lost their positions amidst these controversies.
Running as a Democrat, James made a name for herself in 2016, largely by promising to investigate Trump and his business dealings, which has made her a target of his frustrations. Last year, she achieved a significant civil fraud ruling against him, although an appeals court later dismissed the financial penalties associated with that case.
After her indictment, James expressed that this is part of a broader misuse of the justice system by the Trump administration: “This is nothing but a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system,” she stated.
James has since remarked that these accusations lack merit, asserting that they are motivated by political revenge, an echo of sentiments shared during her campaign against Trump.
The grand jury presentation of her indictment was managed by Lindsey Harrigan, who had recently been appointed as the acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia by Trump. Harrigan replaced the interim prosecutor who stepped down under pressure to bring charges against both James and Comey.
“No one is above the law, and the charges alleged in this case are intentional criminal acts and represent a serious violation of the public trust,” Harrigan commented, emphasizing that the case would be pursued diligently.
Amid these developments, Comey’s defense team has also begun motions related to what they describe as retaliatory prosecution. James is expected to file a similar motion, arguing that the prosecution’s basis is rooted in an unlawful appointment.
Her legal counsel has labeled the case against her as “unwarranted political retaliation,” vowing to contest the charges through every legal avenue available.
As this situation unfolds, the Justice Department has yet to provide comments on potential additional involvement from other federal prosecutors within the Eastern District of Virginia.
