The federal government will repay New York City $106 million to support the city’s continued response to the immigration crisis, according to Sen. Chuck Schumer. DN.Y. announced on Thursday at X.
“New York City will receive $106 million in new federal funding to reimburse immigration costs,” Schumer wrote.
Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Ann Williams Isom said at a press conference that the $106 million is a delayed portion of a larger $150 million aid package promised last summer. .
“We appreciate the productive cooperation of our federal partners and will continue to work closely with them to release funds,” Williams-Isom said. “We continue to advocate for comprehensive immigration reform as well as significant increases in support.”

Schumer also attacked Republicans as he announced the funding, calling on them to stop blocking “a strong bipartisan border bill.”
“Now Republicans must stop blocking a strong bipartisan border bill that would do more,” he wrote.

The Big Apple spent $1.45 billion on immigration aid in fiscal year 2023, according to Mayor Eric Adams.
New York City rented out entire hotels to house some of the last tens of thousands of immigrants to arrive. Other housing options for migrants include setting up cots in schools, temporary use of tents, cruise ship terminals, and former police academy buildings.

More than 140,000 migrants have arrived in New York City since last year, straining social services in the sanctuary city and prompting authorities to ask the federal government for more aid.
