New York Republican suggests hush money case helped to elect Trump: ‘Great irony’

Rep. Mike Lawler (RN.Y.) suggested that the New York hush-money scandal helped President-elect Trump defeat Vice President Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

“Well, the big irony in all of this is that I don't think anyone did more to elect President Donald Trump than Alvin Bragg and Tish James,” Lawler said during an appearance on Fox News on Saturday. he said, referring to Mr. Bragg. (D), Manhattan District Attorney, whose office prosecuted the case in which 12 juries found Trump guilty on 34 counts. The president-elect has denied any wrongdoing.

“In both cases, two rogue prosecutors decided they were going to go after Donald Trump when they ran. They said so. They ran with it. And they actually did it. And in both cases, the accusations are meaningless,” the New York Republican said.

Lawler's remarks came as New York State Judge Juan Marchand on Friday ordered that the hush money criminal sentence be imposed on January 10, 10 days before President Trump's inauguration.

In his decision, Marchan suggested there would be no punishment for the May conviction, citing concerns about immunity from criminal prosecution for Trump, who will be sworn into office later this month.

In response, President Trump said Marchand should be disbarred, adding that he “never falsified any business records.” This is a fabricated accusation by a corrupt judge who is only doing his job for the Biden/Harris Injustice Bureau and an attack on me, their political opponent! ”

Mr. Lawler argued that Mr. Bragg's case should have been thrown out.

“In Alvin Bragg's case, he took what would amount to a worst-case FEC violation from a federal case to a state case, from a misdemeanor to a felony.” “On its own merits alone, it should have been scrapped.”
