New York socialist Democrat faces backlash online for comments on Mexican Independence Day

Viral Controversy Around Assemblywoman’s Independence Day Post

A socialist Democrat from New York, Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, has sparked a significant online reaction by claiming she would bring Mexico’s battle for independence to the U.S. Congress if she is elected.

Valdez, who is campaigning for the 7th District, expressed her opposition to what she termed “empire” and corporate influence in her social media post. She stated, “215 years ago, Mexicans fought an empire that demanded our land and our labor. And we won.” This proclamation revealed her intention to carry that spirit to Congress, positioning herself as New York’s first Mexican American representative.

In her post, Valdez reflected on her encounters with comrades from the Morena party in Mexico, focusing on their efforts to resist what she described as the empires and corporations that have historically exploited them.

However, many online criticized her statement. Journalist Andy Ngo remarked, “American leftists elect people who are open about foreign allegiances and their agenda to serve foreign state interests.” Another critic asked, “Are you campaigning for Mexico or America?” suggesting that Valdez’s pride in her heritage conflicted with her duty to American constituents.

Another user emphasized their pride in Mexican heritage but pointed out that advocating for a foreign nation during a political campaign in the U.S. was inappropriate. Others noted historical injustices related to colonialism in Mexico, questioning why Valdez would celebrate such an occasion.

A response from the Libs of TikTok account was direct: “This is the United States of America. F**k off,” reflecting a hostile view towards Valdez’s statements.

Interestingly, while Valdez aims to challenge “empire,” she seems to be overlooking the nickname of New York as the “Empire State,” a title originating from a compliment made by George Washington.

The Democratic Socialists of America have recently seen an uptick in primary wins against more mainstream candidates, prompting concerns about the growing influence of the far-left within the Democratic Party.
