California Voters Approve Gavin Newsom’s Proposition 50
Political analyst and attorney Katie Zacharias will discuss the effects of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s Proposition 50 and its potential implications for redistricting across the U.S. on “Fox News at Night.”
Following a significant victory in a congressional redistricting initiative, Governor Newsom—who is eyeing a possible run for the 2028 presidential election—plans to host a rally in traditionally Republican Texas this Saturday.
Prop 50, which passed on Tuesday, allows temporarily bypassing California’s bipartisan redistricting commission. Instead, it gives the power to draw congressional maps back to the Democratic-controlled Legislature. This is expected to create five additional Democratic-leaning districts in California, countering a recent map that was drawn to create potential Republican gains in Texas.
Speaking to Fox News Digital, Newsom referenced former President Trump and the Republican Party’s mid-decade push for redistricting, noting, “California went even further. Now we’re taking this fight across the country. We’re helping Democrats in other states fight Mr. Trump’s election fraud.”
This strategy aligns with Trump’s efforts to protect the party’s narrow majority in the House ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. States like Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio have also drafted new maps under his influence.
Failure to pass Proposition 50 would have represented a significant setback for Democrats. Now, with the victory, Newsom has a rallying cry for his party nationwide. “Other leaders in states must face this challenge as well,” he remarked, adding that the stakes are high, particularly with Speaker Jeffries potentially taking the lead in the House.
On Saturday, Newsom is set to rally with Texas Democrats in Houston.
Other Democratic governors, like Illinois’ J.B. Pritzker and Maryland’s Wes Moore, are contemplating similar measures to increase their blue districts. However, Newsom has emerged as a frontrunner in the redistricting debate and the first Democrat to achieve a significant win.
This successful campaign has bolstered Newsom’s stature as a prominent anti-Trump figure, which might prove advantageous in the competitive landscape for the 2028 Democratic nomination. “Initially, he was uncertain about this campaign, but he rallied California voters effectively,” said veteran strategist Maria Cardona. She believes this effort has elevated his political brand, positioning him as a leader as the 2028 race approaches.
