Newport ICE center faces Democratic backlash following Noem meeting

Oregon Democrats are expressing anger over news that a new ICE detention facility might be established near Portland. This comes after Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem hinted at “tough action” following a tense meeting with local officials.

Noem’s October meeting with Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, and local law enforcement ended with her calling them “disloyal”. She suggested federal action was on the table, indicating plans for a facility in Portland.

“After leaving the room, they react completely differently,” Noem remarked. “We’re considering a new facility in Portland. If I have to take a harder approach, I will,” she added.

Local officials have mentioned that the municipal airport in Newport, located about 160 miles southwest of Portland, is being considered for the ICE facility. Newport’s city leaders are collaborating with state and federal lawmakers to gather information about the project and its implications for public safety.

While the Department of Homeland Security hasn’t commented, city officials are actively reaching out to the agency.

Concerns are rising, especially from Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, who labeled the potential decision by DHS to build an ICE facility in Newport as “alarming and outrageous”. Newport Mayor Jan Kaplan emphasized that the well-being of the community is paramount and that there is significant unease among residents about potential ICE enforcement in their neighborhoods.

Kaplan mentioned receiving feedback from Portland residents who claim they might avoid traveling to Newport due to fears of ICE presence. He’s also worried about increased traffic that could accompany the new facility.

An acquired letter shows interest from a Texas-based housing company in leasing land at Newport’s airport for what’s described as “operational support for federal projects”. The proposal includes temporary facilities, fencing, and controlled access points.

Oregon House’s No. 2 Democrat, representing Newport, has urged DHS for clarity on their plans. Representative David Gomberg stated, “It’s essential to communicate your intentions and keep the public informed,” calling for respectful dialogue without local harassment towards U.S. Coast Guard personnel stationed at the airport.
