Residents affected by the Palisades wildfire are expressing their frustration, claiming that California Democrats are disregarding President Trump’s executive order aimed at expediting their recovery and helping them return home.
Recently, Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass faced harsh criticism for their inadequate response to the recovery efforts and for dismissing Trump’s proposal, which many believe could offer much-needed assistance.
“It’s completely out of touch, and I can’t fathom why they would resist this help,” commented a resident, expressing their confusion over the opposition to the aid, suggesting it may be politically motivated.
Another resident voiced their desperation, saying, “If the federal government could simplify the process for us, that would be a great help.” Many neighbors are feeling increasingly hopeless as the current rebuilding process drags on.
“Looks like the federal government will have to step in since California seems unable to manage these funds,” they added.
Newsom bore most of the backlash after reports emerged that Trump’s executive order could bypass state Democrats and allow residents to quickly obtain permits for reconstruction.
Over 16,000 structures were lost to the wildfires, but so far, only about 2,600 rebuilding permits have been issued by city and county officials. Many blame this delay on the inefficiency of Newsom and Bass.
In response, Newsom remarked that “an executive order for rebuilding Mars would be just as useful,” a comment that didn’t sit well with those affected, who felt it was dismissive of their struggles.
Comments on social media reflected widespread disappointment. One user stated, “When federal funds go to California, they just vanish.” Another remarked on the situation, labeling Newsom a “failure.”
Bass faced scrutiny as well after suggesting that Trump should focus on urging the insurance industry to provide aid rather than trying to influence local permitting processes.
“We’re managing things our way, and the president should take care of his responsibilities,” she stated.
Voters have indicated they’re dissatisfied with Bass’s leadership. One commenter on X noted the rise in crime in LA, stating, “It’s become a lawless place.” Others shared their frustration about being unable to rebuild their homes.
Multiple residents discussed how crucial the federal relief package could be for them. One woman, Jessica Rogers, expressed her desperation and need for assistance, saying, “We’re truly struggling. We can’t do this without help.”
“Our state and cities lack the resources to manage this situation effectively. What we really need is federal intervention,” another victim emphasized.
Trump’s order aims to “preempt” local building permit processes, allowing the federal government to overcome bureaucratic obstacles created by state leadership.
However, this initiative has led to fears of prolonged delays at both state and local levels due to bureaucratic challenges, with many expecting resistance from California’s Democratic leadership, all while displaced residents continue to seek urgent help.
Reports indicate that less than 15% of homes destroyed by the fires have received the necessary approvals to begin construction.
