California Governor Signs Bill Against Trump Fund

California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has officially acted to counter President Donald Trump’s proposed $1.7 billion fund aimed at, as some say, weaponizing his agenda. On Tuesday, Newsom stated via social media that he signed new legislation taxing 100% of the benefits distributed to Californians from this contentious fund.

He emphasized that taxpayer dollars should, in his view, assist victims rather than those he deems criminals—specifically law enforcement and individuals involved in actions against democracy. Newsom asserted, “We will not fund criminals.” This push comes as part of his broader opposition to Trump’s policies.

The fund itself emerged from settlements related to a lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service, after Trump’s tax documents were leaked. Critics argue it serves to benefit Trump’s allies and supporters. Newsom framed his actions as a necessary stand against what he called a “slush fund for the January 6th insurrectionists.”

Despite some officials claiming that the fund does not exist—and that it won’t in the future—the debate around its legitimacy continues. Trump has indicated that he still intends to establish it.

During a congressional hearing, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche noted, “We are not moving forward with the plan for the fund, and rightly so.” Additionally, there are opponents who are legally challenging its implementation.

The Justice Department has suggested that potential recipients of this fund could include individuals whose speech has been suppressed by government mandate or parents silenced at school board meetings, among others.

Newsom reiterated his belief that “democracy is worth defending,” positing that public resources should fortify those impacted by wrongdoing rather than those engaged in undermining democratic institutions.

Many speculate that Newsom’s moves might be part of a strategy to bolster his potential run for president in 2028, positioning himself as a significant adversary to Trump’s approach.
