Newsom Considers Redrawing GOP Districts to Boost House Democrats for the Sake of ‘Democracy’

House Democrats Eye Alliance with Governor Newsom

Democrats in the House, hoping to regain their majority, may have found a partner in California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Newsom, known for his opposition to former President Donald Trump and rumored to have ambitions for 2028, is exploring various plans to redistrict and potentially eliminate five to seven Republican-held seats. Recently reported by Punchbowl News, this possible mid-term redistricting comes as Texas is also considering its own plans to redraw districts, aiming to boost Republican representation.

“Trump is trying to steal seats in five Texas Congressional districts,” Newsom commented on social media. He emphasized that this game can indeed be played on both sides.

If Democrats take control of the House, California Democrat Mark Takano is positioned to chair the House Veterans Affairs Committee.

The anticipated clash between California and Texas regarding districting could significantly influence which party holds the House majority in 2026. Currently, Republicans maintain a slim edge with a 220-212 majority, despite having three vacant seats in districts that are typically Democratic.

Trump is actively working to ensure Republican dominance in the House during the midterms, as keeping control would obstruct Democratic efforts to challenge his administration’s agenda.

Given that the independent committee in California has been responsible for drawing the district maps since 2011, Newsom’s redistricting efforts could face significant obstacles. Previous opposition has limited Democrat-led state legislatures from influencing congressional map designs.

However, California Democrats are preparing to take action should Texas Republicans advance their redistricting plans. Newsom suggested, “Special session. Special elections. Voting initiatives. New law,” reiterating that all strategies should be considered when democracy is at stake.

California House Democrats, particularly those secure in their seats, are voicing support for Newsom’s potential redistricting move. Pete Aguilar, the chair of the California House Democrats, noted their awareness of Texas Republicans’ strategies and emphasized the need to keep all options open. Democratic representative Sarah Jacobs added, “If Texas acts, we’ll respond in kind.”

There’s a possibility for California House Republicans to alter the districts to secure more seats for the majority Democratic party, considering that only nine out of California’s 52 representatives are Republicans.

As of now, a spokesperson for Newsom has not responded to requests for comments.
