Newsom Criticizes Trump, Warns of Authoritarianism
California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed strong criticisms of former President Donald Trump, highlighting what he described as Trump’s “authoritarian tendencies.” Newsom cautioned that Trump wouldn’t just relinquish power after his second term, suggesting a serious threat to democratic processes in the country.
At a recent event in Sacramento, Trump dismissed Newsom as a potential Democratic presidential candidate for 2028, claiming that he doesn’t believe in fair elections. Newsom responded with a pointed question about whether Trump was joking about future elections, warning that if Americans don’t wake up, they might lose their country.
When asked for comments on Newsom’s statements, a White House representative replied to Fox News Digital. Meanwhile, Newsom urged Trump to reconsider efforts regarding Texas’s proposed rezoning initiatives and indicated that he might respond with measures to protect voter integrity.
The White House has expressed opposition to a theoretical third term for Trump, citing constitutional concerns. Interestingly, the Trump organization has started selling “Trump 2028” merchandise, fueling discussions about another presidential bid.
“Honestly, I don’t think Trump even wants to run again,” Newsom stated. He mentioned receiving numerous ‘Trump 2028’ hats and questioned the intent behind such marketing. It almost feels like a publicity stunt, he suggested.
As tensions between Newsom and Trump escalated, a contentious relationship became evident, particularly after Trump deployed the California State Guard in a manner that bypassed state authority, an unprecedented move in six decades.
Trump has also utilized the National Guard in Washington, D.C., in a broader strategy aimed at crime control, which has raised alarms across various cities, including Baltimore and Chicago.
Newsom stated, “This is a very serious moment in American history.” He underscored that all Republicans should be concerned about Trump’s “authoritarian behaviors.” He believes Trump represents one of the most damaging leadership figures in recent history.
Following Texas’s legislature endorsing a Trump-supported rezoning map, Newsom is developing his own plans aimed at shifting Democratic representation in Congress. “I’m tired of Democrats losing. We need to protect our democracy,” he asserted.
While denouncing Trump’s administration, Newsom expressed urgency, emphasizing that the nation is facing a critical moment. “We are witnessing the erosion of our democracy in real time,” he warned, noting that the rule of law is being threatened in favor of “the rules of Trump.”
