Newsom faces online criticism for AI video featuring Trump in handcuffs

Backlash Against Newsom Following AI Video

California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing significant criticism online after a Democrat shared an AI-generated video that depicted the arrest of President Donald Trump and other officials from his administration.

Newsom’s social media team attempted to mock Trump with a video shared from a White House account, titled “It’s Cuffing Season,” suggesting it was related to Trump’s immigration policies. The accompanying text read, “Bad news for illegal aliens who commit crimes, but great news for America.”

“This isn’t very funny. All you’re doing is inciting more violence,” someone reacted to the video. The clip showed Trump and Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth handcuffed, with Chief of Staff Stephen Miller alongside them, flanked by law enforcement personnel.

The video has since attracted over 5.7 million views, drawing accusations against Newsom of promoting political violence.

Peter Navarro commented, “I went to prison to protect the Constitution. It’s because of woke individuals like you who have weaponized the justice system. This isn’t crazy. All you’re doing is inciting more violence,” referring to his own four-month prison sentence for defying a subpoena related to January 6 events.

Actor Dean Cain responded, “You’re a complete idiot.” He added, “If Gavin were to become president, his base would want him to prosecute people in the Trump administration… These kinds of failures make that much more difficult,” according to Mark Hemingway from RealClear Investigations.

Scott Jennings, a CNN commentator, tweeted, “This is what it takes to win the Democratic nomination in 2028: promise to jail Trump and all of his appointees.”

In light of Navarro’s criticism, Newsom responded with a snowflake emoji.

Some critics pointed out the irony in Newsom’s earlier support for legislation aimed at curbing misleading AI-generated content, which he then appeared to violate by sharing the video himself. Responses referred to him as a “hypocrite” for signing an anti-First Amendment bill banning such content.

There’s a general belief that Newsom is positioning himself for a potential run in the 2028 presidential election.
