Newsom Plans to Sue Trump Over National Guard Deployment
California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced plans to take legal action against the Trump administration for the deployment of the Army National Guard to the state. This decision comes in the wake of riots related to immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) that erupted over the weekend.
In a statement, Newsom accused Trump of overstepping his authority by sending 2,000 security personnel to Los Angeles following the unrest. He expressed his disapproval on social media, saying, “He set the fire and acted illegally to mobilize the National Guard. We’re suing him.”
State Attorney General Rob Bonta reinforced this sentiment, stating that the president had abused his power by mobilizing California’s State Guard troops. He emphasized that the legal action reflects serious concerns about presidential overreach.
This legal threat emerged after Trump’s border policy chief, Tom Homan, mentioned he might encourage California officials to take action against what he termed “anti-ICE riots.” The riots themselves intensified after an ICE operation in Los Angeles, part of a wider initiative to increase deportations of undocumented immigrants. Reports indicate that numerous arrests were made following the incident, with statistics showing that more than 100,000 people have been detained since Trump’s second term began.
Despite Newsom’s assertions that state officials are managing the situation effectively, the scenes in Los Angeles seem to suggest otherwise. The protests involved aggressive actions against federal law enforcement, including assaulting police vehicles and throwing rocks.
In response to the lawsuit, Trump defended the decision to deploy the National Guard, noting it as a significant measure. Newsom’s ongoing confrontations with President Trump reflect California lawmakers’ broader attempts to challenge ICE operations in the state. Since Trump took office, various initiatives have aimed to limit ICE’s effectiveness, with some cities even designating themselves as sanctuary locations for undocumented immigrants.
