California Governor Gavin Newsom shared on Friday that he has lost some friends over his remarks concerning the fairness of biological males competing in women’s sports.

“I’ve lost some good friends—well, they just don’t talk to me anymore,” Newsom expressed during an episode of his podcast featuring Dr. Phil. He noted the hurt feelings of those friends, suggesting they felt he had crossed a line.

Despite this, Newsom reiterated his long-standing support for LGBT rights, pointing out that he has been an advocate for decades. “My record speaks for itself,” he said, recalling his early appearances on media platforms to discuss issues related to LGBT rights.

As a potential candidate for the 2028 Democratic presidential race, Newsom emphasized that the topic of biological youth in women’s sports needs to be openly addressed, rather than swept aside. “We need to confront these issues; it’s not going away, despite any adolescent blockers,” he remarked.

Dr. Phil voiced agreement with Newsom, suggesting that while they both stand for LGBTQ rights, some matters present complexities that might be challenging to navigate. He referenced the dedication and hard work of elite young athletes, emphasizing their struggle and preparation.

Newsom had previously questioned the inclusion of biological males in female sports, labeling it “deeply unfair.” In another notable decision last year, he signed legislation establishing California as a sanctuary for transgender procedures among minors, defending the rights of parents to make difficult health decisions for their children.
