California Gov. Gavin Newsom will head to Washington this week to meet with President Biden after calling a special session of the state Legislature to “certify President Trump” of the state's progressive policies.
A spokesperson for Mr. Newsom's office said the Democratic governor will travel to Washington, D.C., for a series of meetings with the Biden-Harris administration and California's congressional delegation.
“Building on the progress made since President Biden took office, the Governor is implementing important priorities that will advance the health and well-being of all Californians, including disaster funding and authorizing state health initiatives to improve access to health and mental health care. “We will advocate for Californians and critical climate change and clean air efforts,” a spokesperson for Mr. Newsom said, without providing a specific date for the meeting.
Newsom, who has been at odds with the former president, wrote after Trump's election night victory that California was “ready to fight.”

“Whether it's fundamental civil rights, reproductive freedom or climate action, we refuse to turn back the clock or allow our values and laws to be attacked. '' Newsom said.
These comments came a day after Newsom said he “looks to work with the president-elect.”

During Trump's first term, the Newsom administration filed more than 100 lawsuits against the Trump administration. The governor is now asking the state Legislature to allocate more funding for the California Department of Justice and other state agencies to pursue legal challenges.

Newsom's office said a special session of the state Legislature scheduled for Monday, Dec. 2, will focus on protecting “civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate action, and immigrant families.”

President Trump balked at Newsom's call for a special session, writing on his Truth social platform on Friday that he believed Newsom was “trying to kill our beautiful California.”

“He's using the term 'Trump-proof' as a way to block all the great things he could do to 'Make California Great Again,' but I just won the election by a landslide,” Trump said. he said.
