Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis is accusing a United Airlines flight attendant of being handcuffed by FBI agents on a flight from Denver to California on Saturday.
The 51-year-old Super Bowl champion posted about the incident on his Instagram page, vehemently claiming that when Davis asked the flight attendant for ice for his son, the flight attendant assumed Davis was being violent or threatening.
“The flight attendant either did not hear or ignored his request as he walked past our row,” Davis wrote on Monday. “I calmly reached back and tapped him on the arm, reminding him to ask for another round of ice for my son. His response and what followed should astound us all.”
The former player said the FBI confronted him as soon as the plane landed, handcuffed him in front of his family, and then began investigating the airline’s allegations against him.
He added that the FBI quickly concluded that the flight attendant’s account was false and released Davis from custody.
“I have yet to hear anything from United Airlines,” Davis told his social media followers, “and I will never be able to take back the traumatic experience of my two sons, daughter and wife watching me be handcuffed without any due process or explanation.”
He concluded by saying he “refuses to stand by and not speak out about this sickening injustice and deplorable treatment by United Airlines” and called for a full investigation into the flight attendants.
Davis played for the Denver Broncos when they won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1998 and 1999. He finished his career in 2002 with 7,607 rushing yards and 60 touchdowns. He was named Super Bowl MVP in 1999 and NFL Most Valuable Player in 1998. He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2017.
