The NFL’s International Expansion Continues
The NFL’s influence around the globe is set to quite literally expand. The league is actively increasing its presence in international markets, which includes a rise in the number of regular season games played abroad.
On Tuesday, NFL owners voted to allow for up to 10 international games starting in 2027, an increase from this season’s record of nine games outside the U.S. Cities like Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro, London, Paris, Madrid, Munich, and Mexico City will host these games.
Peter O’Reilly, a league executive, shared that this approach isn’t a fleeting initiative. He mentioned, “Our strategy is not a one-off,” indicating aims of deeper roots in emerging markets. There are regions, particularly in Asia, that are looking ahead — Japan is mentioned as a complex market worth exploring.
Commissioner Roger Goodell has expressed ambitions for the league to host 16 international games in a single season. Furthermore, teams will no longer be able to safeguard home games from being moved to international venues, which was previously an option for two games.
O’Reilly also hinted at the intriguing prospect of hosting the Super Bowl internationally at some point in the future. While discussing this possibility, he acknowledged the challenges but remained optimistic: “I don’t know if you can completely parse it out in terms of feasibility and possibility, but if you’re just talking about feasibility… we are starting to get a better understanding of those buildings,” referring to new stadiums worldwide.
He added that as the league moves internationally, the evident passion from fans and established partnerships with government and private sectors create a solid groundwork. “I think all of that strengthens the foundation that we need to have an international Super Bowl, maybe one day on the distant horizon,” O’Reilly concluded.
Goodell has previously noted that the idea of the Super Bowl taking place outside the U.S. doesn’t surprise him. He seems to agree that, one day, this vision could become a reality.
