NFL Power Rankings: Vikings surge ahead, while the Jags tumble

We're three weeks into the NFL season and we have some new power rankings that show some big changes.

To explain our methodology, NFL writers ranked teams from 1 to 32 and then averaged the scores. In the event of a tie, we broke it with the team with the highest average ranking between the teams.

Let's take a closer look at the biggest gainers and losers of week three.

Biggest winner: Minnesota Vikings (+21)

Needless to say, the Vikings have quickly become one of the hottest teams in the NFL. Minnesota's aggressive and brutal defense embarrassed C.J. Stroud all afternoon, leading to a 34-7 victory and proving that their win over the Niners was no fluke.

This team has a very clear identity: Establish the run on offense, disrupt the pocket on defense, and then get Sam Darnold to explode for a shot when the opportunity arises. It's a pretty basic formula, but right now the team can't cover Justin Jefferson on one side of the ball or diagnose Brian Flores' creative blitz packages on the other.

The Vikings are the real deal and one of the best teams in the NFC.

Biggest loser: Jacksonville Jaguars (-16)

Once a favorite to win the AFC South, the Jaguars now look like the most desperate team in football. They just signed Trevor Lawrence to a huge new contract, but a coaching misstep in 2024 has left Lawrence regressing so much that it looks like one of the worst contracts in football.

The coaching staff is awful, unmotivated and completely losing on both ends. Things aren't going to get better in Jacksonville unless a complete coaching change is made and a new GM is brought in. The problem is, it's unclear if ownership has the courage to make these necessary moves, leaving the Jaguars in limbo until something changes their course.

Unfortunately, even at 30th place it feels like this team could fall even lower.
