NGOs Reveal Mexico’s Political Elite Involved in Misappropriated Funds Meant for Children’s Cancer Treatment

Private Organizations Accuse Mexican Officials of Fund Misappropriation

A coalition of private organizations has lodged complaints with the Attorney General’s Office in Mexico, claiming that prominent figures from the ruling party have misappropriated federal funds intended for pediatric cancer treatment. The groups assert that this theft has contributed to the deaths of over 5,000 children suffering from cancer.

Among those accused in the complaint are Andres Lopez Beltran, the son of former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, along with several of his close associates.

This week, organizations including Parents of Children with Cancer, De Corazon AC, and Fundacion Nicoatole formally presented their case against Lopez Beltran and Jorge Amilcar Olan at the FGR. They are facing serious allegations of genocide, murder, and organized crime.

In their statement, the organizations highlight a series of contracts that were allegedly obtained unlawfully by companies associated with Amilcar Olan. They claim these enterprises, aided by Lopez Beltran’s connections, redirected millions from federal funding into fake companies that misappropriated the funds. Consequently, thousands of children across Mexico went without necessary cancer medications, leading to over 5,000 fatalities, according to the statement.

It’s uncertain if authorities in Mexico will take action regarding this complaint. Recently, President Claudia Sheinbaum and her administration have publicly backed Lopez Beltran, denying any ongoing investigation despite his connections to significant cartel-related fuel smuggling incidents. Notably, reports indicate that the U.S. government has rescinded Lopez Beltran’s tourist visa and is looking into these allegations.

Various news reports and statements from opposition politicians suggest that Lopez Beltran relied on Amilcar Olan not just for illicit money transfers but also to siphon off government funds through contracts funneled to shell companies. Despite the accusations, the Mexican government appears to be protecting Amilcar Olan, who has since left the country and is reportedly residing in Europe.
