Production has kicked off for the “Madden” film, with Amazon MGM Studios revealing an intriguing first look on Tuesday.
In the newly released image, Nicholas Cage, looking quite different, portrays John Madden, the legendary coach of the Oakland Raiders who later became a renowned NFL broadcaster.
Christian Bale also transforms into Al Davis, the Raiders’ owner, in a striking comparison.
Both Oscar winners are depicted on a football field, gesturing towards a Super Bowl ring for the cameras.
“The movie chronicles Madden’s incredible journey, highlighting his time with Al Davis and the Raiders, his ascent in the NFL, and his iconic status in the football world,” stated Amazon in a press release.
David O. Russell took the reins as director and writer of this biopic, following earlier scripts by Cambron Clark. Russell, known for films like “Fighter,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” and “American Hustle,” has received several Oscar nominations.
The cast also features John Mulaney as the founder of Electronic Arts, Kathryn Hearn as Madden’s wife, and Siena Miller as Al Davis’s wife, Carol.
Producers include Russell, Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tish, Jonathan Schkat, David O. Russell, Matthew Badman, Colin Wilson, David Bloomfield, Michael Strahan, and Constant Schwartzmolini.
Madden gained acclaim as the Raiders coach, leading the team to seven AFC Championship games and clinching the Super Bowl following the 1976 season.
He amassed even greater fame in broadcasting, becoming synonymous with the “John Madden Football” and “Madden NFL” video games.
Madden passed away in December 2021 at the age of 85.
Davis, who served as the Raiders’ owner and general manager for 39 years, is remembered for his motto, “Just win, baby.” He died in October 2011 at 82 due to congestive heart failure.
The “Madden” film was initially announced in 2023 during its development stage, and Will Ferrell seemed to be involved at one point.
In April 2024, reports surfaced of Hugh Jackman being in discussions for a role as Madden, while Tom Hanks was rumored to play Davis.
However, by mid-2024, Cage had officially secured the role of Madden, with Bale subsequently confirmed to play Davis.
As for the release date of “Madden,” it remains unannounced.
