Nicolas Cage’s beachfront property faced some serious damage after his driveway collapsed, resulting in a sinkhole. According to reports, the collapse was attributed to coastal erosion triggered by Hurricane Marie, which stirred up large waves and elevated tides along the Pacific coast.
Footage from the scene showed a substantial hole, measuring about 30 by 30 feet, in front of the actor’s oceanfront home. This sinkhole not only exposed the support beams beneath but also revealed remnants of a glass fence and concrete scattered about, with orange cones marking the area.
The City of Malibu addressed the situation on social media, revealing that they responded to the collapse early Tuesday morning, which was also associated with a gas leak. Emergency services, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Fire Department, arrived to close the private road and pinpoint the gas leak.
Officials stated that the City’s Building Safety Division and the Southern California Gas Company were actively evaluating the situation. They had red-tagged five nearby homes, prohibiting entry, while both entities continued assessments regarding safety concerns in that area. Thankfully, no evacuations were necessary, although the city mentioned they are keeping a close eye on potential risks from ongoing coastal erosion, especially along stretch known for its vulnerabilities, like the Pacific Coast Highway.
Looking ahead, the city mentioned preparations for possible strong storms and other weather events tied to forecasted strong El Niño conditions. It’s a worry that could affect the entire Southern California coast.
As for Cage, he bought this 4,000-square-foot residence in 2024 for about $10.5 million. The modern house boasts a rooftop deck and an outdoor lounge area, with panoramic views thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows. It seems he was not at home during the driveway incident, and, so far, there have been no reports of injuries connected to the collapse.
