Nicole Kidman wins best actress in Venice, but misses ceremony due to mom’s sudden death: ‘I’m in shock’

Nicole Kidman is mourning the death of her mother, Janelle Anne Kidman.

Kidman, who won the best actress award at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday for her performance in “Babygirl” but had to miss the ceremony to be with her family, broke the news of her mother's death in a statement released by the film's director, Halina Raine.

“Shortly after arriving in Venice, I learned that my beautiful and brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, had passed away,” Kidman said in a statement. Associated Press“I'm in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award belongs to her. She shaped me and raised me.”

A representative for Kidman confirmed her death, telling Fox News Digital: “The family is heartbroken and asks that their privacy be respected at this time.”

Over the years, Kidman has spoken openly about the close bond she has with her mother and shared her views on her mother's health issues.

In an interview with NPR Fresh air During a 2022 podcast, Kidman said, “Because my mother and I have such a close relationship, it's given me the opportunity to see the world, and she gives me the opportunity to see the world through the eyes of an 81-year-old woman, which is really beneficial right now because my mother is highly cognitive. She has all of her brain function, so she hasn't lost anything. She hasn't lost her memory, which is interesting, and she's incredibly intelligent.”

“My mother is very open and honest, and that gives me access to the world, so I access it through her eyes, so even at nearly 80, her eyes are a part of me,” she continued. “Obviously, it's my mother's perspective. Every 80-year-old has a different perspective, but it's my mother's perspective, and it's her particular path, but I'm absorbing it and learning.”

“My mother gave me the passion to pursue the career I have today because I always wanted to please her,” Kidman told the outlet in 2020. “But she also carved out her own path and wanted to give her daughters the opportunity to carve their own path as well.”

Nicole credits her mother with inspiring her to pursue her dreams.

“My mother didn't necessarily have the career she wanted, but she was determined to give her daughters an equal opportunity,” Kidman added. “That's what gave me life. My mother and my father gave me life.”

Kidman's father, Antony Kidman, died in 2014.
