Massive Fire at Assisted Living Facility in Massachusetts

Tragedy struck an assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, where at least nine people lost their lives and around 30 others were hospitalized after a raging fire broke out. The incident, which occurred late Sunday night, saw residents desperately trying to escape the flames.

About 50 firefighters, including 30 who were off duty, were quickly dispatched to the scene at the Gabriel House. Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon described the situation as an “unfathomable tragedy” for both the families involved and the local community.

“This is an unfathomable tragedy for the families involved and the Fall River community,” Chief Bacon said.

In total, 30 individuals sustained injuries, including five firefighters who have since been released from medical care. However, one of the injured remains in critical condition.

“Crews faced heavy fire coming through the main entrance, with multiple people hanging from windows, seeking rescue,” Bacon noted. “That’s not something anyone wants to see.”

“Firefighters arrived to a chaotic scene with flames, smoke, and victims screaming for help. Every firefighter on duty in the city responded,” he added.

The fire broke out around 9:30 p.m., and though the cause is still under investigation, officials indicated that it does not seem to be intentional.

The facility housed approximately 70 residents at the time of the fire, which has now been evacuated.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey also released a statement on Monday, offering her condolences to those affected.

“My heart goes out to those waking up to the most horrific news imaginable about their loved ones,” Healey said. “I’m thankful for the firefighters and first responders whose efforts saved lives. We are all praying for those mourning their losses and hoping for the swift recovery of the injured.”

“A thorough investigation is already in progress,” she continued, expressing confidence in the resilience of Fall River’s community. “Now is the time for all of us to unite in support during this difficult time.”

Fall River is located about 50 miles south of Boston.
